The Essex
Away from the few growing urban centers, such as Boston, the hearth was the center of the home during the period after the American revolution. The kitchen of a farmhouse also served as the family room, dining room, and living room, as well as a place to sleep. The detail of the moldings of the Essex is subdued. The panels can be either raised or flat. A door appears to the side of the firebox to conceal a bee hive oven or a woodbox. It can also be a built-in cabinet to house and display a collection.
