Architectural design during the Greek Revival was inspired by the classical designs of the ancient Greeks. Molding profiles were bolder than during the Federal period, and walls were no longer paneled but were plastered to simulate stucco and stone. The style was prominent in the new towns that formed as the country grew and pushed west.

The Hudson displays a carved sunburst in the center of the frieze. This design is repeated in composition ornament above the pilasters, which are turned full round to mimic the columns of ancient Greek temples. The shelf arcs gracefully at the center, while the arc is reversed over the pilasters. The surround, as shown, wraps slightly around the edges of the chimney breast. It is also available for a fireplace that is on a flat wall.
