The Philadelphia

Before the Federal period began, Philadelphia had become the most populous city in the country, and cabinetmaking was a well established trade to satisfy the needs of a large city. However, the export of furniture by Philadelphia’s cabinetmakers was small compared to that by shops in Boston and Newport.

The Philadelphia displays typical design characteristics of the start of the nineteenth century. The bellflower design of the composition molding on the legs is similar to the bellflower inlay that often appears on Hepplewhite style table legs. The floral theme is further seen in the baskets that are at the top of the pilasters, and the swags and drops on the field below the shelf. The reeding that surrounds the opening for the firebox is slightly larger scale than the reeding that is under the shelf. The molding that covers the edge of the shelf is mitered around the shadow of the pilasters that appears in the shelf.
