The Providence
Providence and Newport were political and commercial rivals throughout the eighteenth century. However, by the start of the 1800’s Providence had become the more important center. The growing merchant class demanded furnishings that reflected the latest taste and displayed their growing affluence.
The Providence includes ornamental items, such as acanthus decorated capitals, egg and dart molding, and floral pendants, that seem to be carved. They are instead cast in composition molding, earlier called “French Putty”. The reeding on the three quarter round pilasters is carried forward in the panels below the shelf, and adds vertical motion that will emphasize the items that you may display on the shelf.
