At the height of the China Trade ships from Salem were so numerous in Canton that it appeared to the Chinese merchants that the City of Salem was instead a country. Prosperous Salem merchants built great square brick houses that were formally symmetrical and very pleasingly balanced. Well proportioned balustrades and beautiful semi-circular porches at the front entrances attractively decorated otherwise flat facades.

The Salem displays the refined detail that was common in the interior woodwork that was throughout the house. Full round columns on each side of the firebox support the frieze. The moldings under the shelf include a bold quarter round with turned rings that is accented above by two fascias that project noticeably and below a delicate cyma curve. Composition ornament on the frieze is appropriate to the period.
