The San Francisco
The Arts and Crafts movement sought to preserve traditional methods of handwork practiced by craftsmen. It developed in reaction to the high level of mechanization that resulted from the industrial revolution, and the extensive use of machine produced ornamentation that characterized the Victorian period.
The San Francisco exhibits clean lines and understated moldings that were common in bungalows. The plate rail that caps the overmantel approximately three quarters of the way up the wall is supported by a cove molding, which is repeated under the mantel shelf. All pieces, including the panels in the overmantel are oak, stained, and given three coats of a clear finish.
